When we heard the news that Jimmy Carter had passed away, it seemed appropriate to offer our condolences to one of our talented customers, Mr. Russ Philbeck, a woodworker and chair maker in San Diego who had a long-time friendship and collaboration with Jimmy Carter. When we called Russ, he informed us that three local TV news stations had visited his home earlier that day to interview him about his relationship with Mr. Carter, and, of course, they brought their TV cameras into his woodworking shop.
In his book, Making Ladder Back Chairs with Russ Philbeck, The Forward
includes a statement by Jimmy Carter: It reads:
“Russ Filbeck and I have something of a kindred spirit. We both grew up on farms, served in the United States Submarine Service, and we both enjoy making ladder back chairs.”
